Symphonies in a Bottle: Extraordinary Music for Extraordinary Krug Champagnes

Suite for Krug in 2008 is a symphony in three movements, inspired by three Champagnes from an exceptional year.

Krug has long recognised the impact of sound on taste perception. With an astute belief that music can elicit new sensations, revealing previously unseen aspects of their Champagnes.

With creative aplomb, they proposed musical pairings as an unexpected way to discover the exceptional Krug Champagnes, building on the concept of food pairings.

Krug’s Cellar Master was able to compose three expressions of Champagne around this exceptional harvest: Krug Clos du Mesnil 2008, Krug 2008 and Krug Grande Cuvée 164ème Édition. The house met multi-award-winning Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto in 2019, who was inspired by Krug to write a symphony based on his tasting perceptions. A wonderful concept sure to round out the olfactory experience on a higher level.

This extraordinary talent in music Ryuichi Sakamoto, is a towering figure in the worlds of music and art for more than five decades, is a master at translating images and emotions into music. Notable soundtracks include The Revenant (2015) and The Last Emperor (1987), for which he received an Academy Award for Best Original Score.

The Creative Process and Beautiful Results

The process involved Ryuichi Sakamoto tasting Krug Champagnes and corresponding with Krug Cellar Master Julie Cavil over a period of about 18 months and his small group travelled to Reims to record the sounds of Krug, from the vineyards to the cellars. He discovered three Champagnes inspired by the exceptional 2008 harvest: Krug Clos du Mesnil 2008, Krug 2008, and Krug Grande Cuvée 164ème Édition. In 2008, they named this trio of Krug Champagnes Krug from Soloist to Orchestra.

What he imagined was a modern symphony in three movements based on the sensations he felt while tasting and observing these Champagnes: “Suite for Krug in 2008.”

With three Champagne expressions crafted around the same harvest, Ryuichi Sakamoto was naturally inspired to compose a symphony in three movements, each representing a different Champagne.
