Summer food is typically fresh, light, easy and flavorful. Those foods in the glorious summertime that seem to stand for everything that makes summer so great. True for all seasonal foods they are best selected and eaten at this, their peak of flavor. Eating foods in season has been a custom since ancient civilizations. Summer seasonal eating can be a social event as is typical at Christmas time, or Easter when we gather around tables to celebrate the season with foods mother nature provides at those times of the year. Like the holidays we gather together, sitting outside in hot sunny weather, joyfully picnicking or at alfresco dinner parties that celebrate all the greatness that this season has to offer.
Foods that Keep You Cool
In the heat of summer, there are foods that will cool you down (and some foods that will cool you and those that heat you up may surprise you!). We typically eat lighter foods this time of year because eating heavier ones take more energy to digest, which can cause you to over heat. Some foods that are harder to digest is meat if you eat too much of it and also, surprisingly, ice cream! In countries where the thermometer reaches great highs, they tend to eat foods that are spicy. When you eat spicy food in the summer you feel hot initially and sweat a little and its the perspiration when it evaporates off the skin that cools you down. Hot tea works much in the same way. Drinking lots of water will refresh you (with lemon for added flavor). Sweet, juicy fresh fruits and vegetables that have a high water content and are very tasty like watermelon, peaches, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, cucumber and adding a sprig of mint to your water and desserts which has surprising refreshing qualities!
