The Essoyes municipality has recently acquired the Renoir family home. Soon this whole epoque will come to life again.
This home is found in the Essoyes village (Champagne) and is steeped in history. Its sentimental and artistic roots run deep.
It was Mrs Renoir’s birthplace and provided much inspiration for the painter. It will always been known as the final resting place for the whole Renoir family including one of the greatest Impressionists masters . Riding on the back of the Renoirs international popularity, Esssoyes is ideally positioned to bring its heritage into the limelight and provides the public an opportunity to admire the artists favourite spots. The ‘Du cote de Renoir” website which was inaugurated in 2011 was a joint collaboration between the Renoir Association and the Essoyes municipality. The latter recently acquired the family home as part of the following stage in the project for culture and tourism called ‘Renoir in Essoyes’. It was not only the masters home for nearly 20 years but served as a cultural breeding ground as well as a family home and a rural retreat for friends. The house cannot be missed when following the “Cote des Renoirs” visit in Essoyes.
Scope of the Restoration Work
The house ( total surface area exceeding 300 square meters) comprises a ground floor, a first floor and a renovated beamed ceiling. There is a kitchen, living room, a big room which served as the artists studio for several years, Renoirs and Alines rooms and the childrens bedrooms. The home is built over a traditional vaulted cellar, as typified in the region. It is flanked by as courtyard in the front and a big garden in the back, opening up to the painters studio built in 1906. It has been open to the public for several years and received the Accolade Maison des Illustres in 2012. On completion of the restoration works, this exceptional place will open its doors to the public. Visitors will recapture the essence of Renoirs era whilst contemplating the soft, homely and artistic legacy of Pierre August Renoir.
