Discover: Being a Patron of the Arts

Artwork and artists have never been so accessible. Art is everywhere from a local boutiques to quaint art galleries in small towns.

There is always art around us. Subject to taste, of course, but there are so many types of work to choose from. Whether your particular pleasure is paintings, sculpture, drawings, or photography, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Artist and Patron: A Beautiful Relationship

Historically, arts patrons were aristocracy, royalty, popes and others that used to financially support artists like painters, sculptors and musicians. In the times of the Renaissance, for example, artists were not painting what they liked, but painting all commissioned work, specifically for their patrons. Patrons are the lifeblood of artists. Powerful and wealthy patrons would have a master artist who had more artistic privilege and was highly respected people in the community. It was during this period and under these circumstances that many of the masters that we still revere today were creating works, like the works of Rembrandt. Musically, even Beethoven was a part of this patronage system. While patronage of the arts still exists today, though the relationships are vastly different, like in the way of corporate-sponsored art commissions and individuals requesting pieces from favoured artists, patrons are still very necessary for artists to survive.

Fall in Love with Art

Most people who love art, particularly fine art, love the work of certain artists and may purchase a piece or two. Consummate collectors may collect many types and amass a vast mixed collection whether it be paintings, illustrations or sculptures. You don’t need an art major to get out there and appreciate art. There is so much to explore. Bringing some art home and becoming an involved patron of the arts is an enriching experience. Collecting even a few pieces that can become a cherished part of your estate and be passed on to your family is worthwhile doing. Going to galleries can be a great family experience and exposing children to the art world is a fascinating discovery for you and for them. To see art through the eyes of a child is amazing and for them, is a wonderful way to broaden their minds and cultivate a view of arts and culture.
