This elaborate means of covering a bed, which can be changed to suit the room decor, is the pinnacle of luxury.

What is a Baldachin?

The word “Baldachin” is derived from the name of a rich fabric from Baghdad, spelt “baudekin” in English and other languages. At a ceremony held at Westminster Abbey in 1247, Henry III of England donned a gown described as “de preciosissimo baldekino,” according to Matthew Paris, the English Benedictine monk, chronicler, artist in illuminated manuscripts and cartographer. The term for the fabric then extended to the cloth-made ceremonial canopies.

Simply put - the Baldachin is a Canopy.
