Ask any woman, and they will typically have at least 3 tubes of lipstick or lip gloss in their purse at any one given time.
The makeup staple of all women, typically it is the first make up they ever owned or started wearing and it is one of the indispensable tools in a woman’s beauty regime. Even if you don’t wear make up that much you’ll at least own a tube or two of lipstick, because when worn, make-up on the lips is just one of those essentials and it can even double as a blush! There is something so alluring about a tube of lipstick and wonderful about lips that shine with a little gloss. There are many formulations and types of lipsticks and glosses. Lipstick is by far, the oldest of the two and has the most history.
The Origins of Lipstick
Wearing make up on the lips has been around for thousands of years and evolved over time, long changed from the drying, cakey thick, matte lipsticks even over the past 20 years what with technology and advances in beauty continuously evolving. Many today are more sheer, glittery and lighter, even possessing lip enhancing qualities. Though there are now many terrific more sophisticated lip glosses that provide color, shine, anti-aging ingredients and moisture to the lips. Lipstick it would appear was first invented 5,000 years ago by Mesopotamian women, worn by Egyptian women and by Cleopatra. It was made from substances like semi-precious stones, seaweed, beetles, ants and even potentially dangerous ingredients.
The Origin of Lip Gloss
Lip gloss has a much more recent history. The first commercial lip gloss was called X-Rated and it was released in 1932 by Max Factor. It was sold up until 2003 until the product was retired. Preference ranges from woman to woman. There are so many types, colors and styles to choose from, so which colors work for your skin tone? Mixing them is often a good way to wear them with a nice creamy base of color with a sheer or gold gloss over top.
Lipstick is Recession Proof
Did you know that lipstick is “recession proof”? Makeup for the lips is one of those things that you can’t seem to get enough of, and there are certainly more colors and brands to choose from than it seems there is time and it is one of those little indulgences you can always afford and can’t afford to live without!
