Auction House Sales Milestones

In 2013 the auction house achieved an overall sales total of 178.1-million euros, representing an increase of 24% on 2012, and notably achieved the third highest auction price of the year in France with the sculpture La Rivière, by Aristide Maillol, that sold for over 6.1-million euros. It has also confirmed its position as market leader for Comic Strips in Europe, Collectors’ Cars in continental Europe, jewellery and watches in France and Monaco and Old Master Paintings in Paris.

Over a period of three days and under the hammer of Maître François Tajan, Artcurial sold close to 1000 lots of collectors’ watches, jewellery and Hermès Vintage handbags. Time and again, this Monégasque event has proved to be one of the most eagerly anticipated sales of the year. The week’s sales realised 14 093 081 € / 18 983 380 $, up 10% on 2013, and allowed the auction house to establish several records and achieve some remarkable prices. International buyers were particularly proactive, with some 35 different nationalities represented.
Great Growth in Jewelry Sales
For the jewellery sale alone, there were more than twice as many international buyers than in 2013. This international clientèle represented 75% of the volume of sales over the week, with some 15% coming from Asia and 10% from America. Some departments saw considerable growth in this area : the Hermès Vintage sale attracted 25% more bidders from Asia than in 2013, and the Watch sale had 66% more buyers from Asia and 33% from the Middle East than the previous year. Notably there were almost 100 new buyers.

For the 10th consecutive year, Artcurial will take up residence in its summer quarters at the Hôtel Hermitage in Monte Carlo between 18 and 23 July for a series of sales dedicated to the finest luxury collectors’ items : Jewellery, Watches and Hermes Vintage. With François Tajan wielding the gavel, bidders from Asia, America, Russia and Europe congregate to discover some genuine works of art. This Monegasque rendezvous continues to be one of the most eagerly anticipated sales of the year, and realised some 14 M€ / 19 M$ in 2014, with around 35 different nationalities represented.

Having set a new world record in 2014 for a Rolex Daytona Paul Newman Panda Tropical that sold for 336 600 € / 453 333 $ including premium in Monaco, Artcurial will this year offer a prestigious selection of 30 Rolex watches from 1930s to the present day, including 7 lots from the Collection of a Gentleman.
A star of watch auctions, Patek Philippe will be represented by a splendid watch from 2007, a rare perpetual calendar chronograph bracelet in 18K white gold (estimate : 130 000 -180 000 € / 145 000 – 200 000 $). Other exceptional lots include two subscription watches numbered 8/300 (pocket and wrist watch), by Breguet and estimated to fetch 200 000 – 250 000 € / 220 000 – 280 000 $. Finally, there will be nearly 50 Cartier lots to bid for in the auction.
Since 2005, the Hermès vintage sales created by Artcurial have become an international reference. Year after year, the auction house continues to build on its position as market leader in this domain.
Exceptional items are to be found in the annual Monte-Carlo sale, attracting « fashionistas » and collectors from around the world. They will once again discover a hundred carefully chosen lots : special orders, unique items and iconic designs created form rare and exotic leathers. Of note is a magnificent « Kelly-Golf » bag (estimate : 15 000 – 20 000 € / 17 000 – 22 000 $).
In 2014, bidders fought over two exceptional stones mounted in rings : a splendid diamond of 16,87 cts D, IF, type « IIa », mounted by Van Cleef & Arpels, that fetched 1,8 M€ / 2,5 M$, and a fancy vivid blue 2.39 ct diamond that sold for 1,8 M€ / 2,5 M$.
In 2015, alongside the prestigious signature pieces from the Place Vendôme and historic pieces such as a Raymond Templier brooch and items of jewellery by Cartier, Boucheron and Marchak, the jewellery department at Artcurial will offer a 22.80 ct « Royal Blue » cabochon Kashmir sapphire (estimate : 400 000 – 500 000 € / 450 000 – 560 000 $) and a pear-shaped fancy light pink 4.59 ct diamond, (estimate : 230 000 – 250 000 € / 260 000 –280 000 $).
