So many of us spend our long winter days yearning for summer, but as summer turns to fall we learn to reacquaint ourselves with the bountiful fresh foods and vibrant foliage that present themselves each year.

None of us can resist the lure of the orchard at this time of year. There is something inspiring and romantic about throwing on a sweater and heading out to an apple orchard to pick a bushel of our favorite apples. Apples are not only the quintessential fall snack but they are long lasting, so why not stock up.

Farm Markets Plentiful with Luxurious, Tasty Food

Squash, mushrooms, figs, pears and sweet potatoes are often overlooked when we plan our fall picking. If heading to the orchard is not your thing, perhaps a morning at a local farm market will allow you to experience the freshest fall produce in a more simple manner. We often think of markets as a summer pastime but the markets are brimming with pie, soup and stew ingredients in the fall. There is truly a bounty of great fall foods waiting for you at each market.

Unusual Outings: Consider Mushroom Foraging!

Foraging for mushrooms might be something you think only happens during the truffle season in France, however you might just find the experience available close to home. Lake Rosseau in the Muskoka region of Ontario is a favored destination of the wealthy throughout the summer. The Red Leaves resort hosts a fall Mushroom Foraging and combined Cooking Class. A Naturalist will accompany you as you learn to identify edible mushrooms. The bounty will be turned into a feast of salads, soups, sauces, gravies and pastries by the resort’s Executive Chef.

Beyond mushrooms, many cities celebrate their local harvest during fall. Look for oyster, shellfish or salmon festivals. Take in a garlic festival or a soup festival showcasing local ingredients. Wherever you live, there’s bound to be a way to celebrate all of fall’s fabulous bounty.
