Whether traveling for business or for pleasure, the number of female travelers is higher today than it has ever been in the past.

Marybeth Bond also know as The Gutsy Traveler, is the number one women’s travel expert in the USA and according to her there has been a 230 per cent increase in women-only travel companies in the last six years.

Safety

Crime is prevalent throughout the world and should always be a consideration when visiting a new city or country.  When traveling abroad always be aware of the dangers of pickpockets.  Try not to carry too much money or important documents with you in the event that you do fall victim.  Utilize hotel safes and store your passport or travel documents away for safekeeping.  Women should avoid wearing a purse slung over the shoulder and opt instead for a purse whose strap crosses the body or use a money belt around the waist and avoid the purse altogether.

Alone or in a group, women are more vulnerable than their male counterparts when traveling.  Consider avoiding small and deserted streets in the evening and opt instead for busy, well lit roads. Avoid the unwanted attention of men by purchasing an inexpensive wedding band if you don’t already own one.

Attire While Traveling

It is important for women to be culturally sensitive to the differences in fashion in the city or town they are visiting.  More conservative necklines or hemlines may be an important show of respect in small, less cosmopolitan towns.  It might also be a factor when visiting a religious institution.  Look for  guidelines regarding the coverage of arms and heads in addition in order to avoid embarrassing situations.

Befriend the Locals

Men, women and children in foreign countries are often more receptive to helping women travelers and can become a wealth of information for you during your visit.  Some of the best restaurants, shopping or historical districts can be uncovered through a simple conversation with a local.  Frequent the same coffee shop or chat with your neighbor on a bus ride and you may learn more than you could have from a travel guide.
