Italesse introduces the optimum Champagne glass, the result of a joint effort between designers Claesson Koivisto Rune and world’s No. 1 Champagne expert Richard Juhlin.
Richard Juhlin Optimum
WORLD LAUNCH: A world launch takes place in Tokyo on October 31st, at ‘Valve at 81’. The European launch will take place at famous Chateau Les Crayères in Reims, Champagne, on November 20th.
The ‘Richard Juhlin Optimum’ glass for drinking Champagne has been refined to perfection to bring out the best of any Champagne.
In a process lasting over three years, Mr. Juhlin has tested the glass in all its prototype stages. Each time, with at least ten mouthblown glasses and between four and six different types of Champagne. The designers, Claesson Koivisto Rune, are responsible for the overall design of the glass, synthesising Mr. Juhlins exact measurement instructions together with other factors, such as the poise, proportioning and overall sculptural character of the glass. The ‘Richard Juhlin Optimum’ Champagne glass is uncompromising in its visual and tactile pleasure.
The Result is Excellence in Quality & Performance
The final result, exact to the increments of degrees and millimetres, is a uniquely thin and slender, machine-made glass which ensures quality and performance consistency. Furthermore, the manufacturing process enables the glass to be priced at a level that allows you to throw the glass over your shoulder without a great deal of remorse the next morning!
As final proof of the optimum conditions that the glass creates, the Richard Juhlin glass is available with the ‘Juhlin Line‘, traced around the bowl of the glass, indicating the exact level to fill the glass to in order to experience Champagne at its purest form.

About Richard Juhlin
Richard Juhlin is recognised as the No.1 Champagne expert in the world. He has one of the best noses in the world and the extraordinary ability to evaluate and categorize aromas and tastes. He holds the World Record in tasted Champagnes since 1998 and has currently tasted more than 8.500 different Champagnes. He has been knighted in Champagne (Chevalier del Arc, 1997) and he has received the Merit de Agricole (2002), both awarded by the French Ministry of Agriculture.
In Paris in 2003, when Richard Juhlin was invited for the annual blind-tasting by Spectacle du Monde, he pinpointed the exact producer, brand and year of 43 out of the 50 Champagnes on the table. Of the seven Champagnes that had escaped him he did identify the correct year. The runner up, a former sommelier world champion, managed to correctly identify a total of four out of the 50 Champagnes.
Three years later, Richard Juhlin was challenged again in the same forum. The format this time was a duel, against another sommelier world champion, and the task at hand was to identify as many as possible among 20 rosé Champagnes. The opponent identified three champagnes, while Richard Juhlin pinpointed all 20. Since then, he feels he no longer has anything to prove in this particular genre.
Since 1995, Richard Juhlin has published seven books on Champagne. The latest “A Scent of Champagne”, contains descriptions of 8000 tasted and rated Champagnes as well as a catalogue presenting and ranking the district of Champagne’s producers and Champagne houses. In 2001, 2004, 2013 and 2014 his books have received the “Best Book on French Wines in the World” award.
In 2014, Richard Juhlin was awarded France’s highest honour, the Legion d’Honneur in the rank of ‘chevalier’, for his efforts to promote Champagne. Generally, the Legion d’Honneur is only awarded to French nationals, although an exception was made for Richard Juhlin.
