We had eaten black truffles before — and they tasted like the scent of old libraries: arcane yet grand, laden with the taste of history and mystery. And sometimes, with a hint of bitter chocolate. But going on an actual truffle hunt was a pilgrimage of sorts, both entertaining and philosophical, as we would actually search for these “diamonds of cuisine”, as the renowned 18th French gastronomic writer, Brillat Savarin, called them. Ancient Edible ‘Black Diamonds’ This “diamond” is actually an hypogeum fungus, which grows underground near…

One of the oldest cultivated fruits dating back 8000 years, dates have long provided rather mediocre sweet fare in Britain. However the jewel of all dates is the luscious, mahogany brown, plump, glossy Medjool date from Saudi Arabia, which are also the sweetest and taste like caramel. These dates, often referred to as the  “Cadillac of Dates,” are a natural thing of beauty with their richness, succulent sweetness and juicy flesh, there’s nothing in the world quite like a Medjool date. What makes them so special is their natural sugar crystals that give its skin a slight shimmer. Biting into one, you’ll initially notice a rush of flavors, like wild honey, cinnamon and caramel. These are truly one of nature’s most delectable treats. Origin of Dates and the “Trees of Life” Medjool dates originate from the Middle East and North African regions, and play a very important role in the…

Harvested from icebergs in remote Arctic waters, Svalbarði is a luxurious drinking water brand that is due to launch in London’s most prestigious department store – Harrods – on 15th February 2017. The product is as unique as the story of its conception: in 2013, Norwegian-American Jamal Qureshi collected meltwater as a gift for his wife while travelling in the Norwegian island territory of Svalbard – one of Europe’s last great wildernesses. The pure water would make for a delicious cup of tea, he thought. Four years later, and the whimsical, selfless thought has transformed into an epicurean product, which is redefining the very notion of drinking water. With approval from the Governor of Svalbard, Mr. Qureshi charters an icebreaker – the Ulla Rinman – and seeks out the purest of icebergs in Kongsfjorden, just 1,000km from the North Pole at 79° north. As fresh as the day it fell…
